alliances
1839- The Treaty of London
Guaranteed the neutrality of Belgium in any war in Europe. This treaty was the reason Britain gave for being dragged into WWI.
1873- The League of the Three Emperors
The emperors of Russia, Germany and Austro-Hungary agreed to cooperate internationally but it was vague and non binding.
1879- The Dual Alliance
A defensive treaty between Germany and Austro-Hungaty, each promising to come to the others aid if attacked by Russia.
1882- The Triple Alliance
Treaty between Austria, Germany and Italy
1887- The Reinsurance Treaty
Between Germany and Russia giving each other military support
1890- Otto von Bismarck, the brain behind these alliances resigned as chancellor and Kaiser Wilhelm II takes over and adopts a more militaristic approach.
1892- Franco-Russian Alliance
After the Reinsurance Treaty Lapsed, Russia was left isolated along with France, they signed the treaty to protect themselves against Germany and her allies if they declared war on them.
1904- The Entente Cordiale-
Britain was beginning to worry about Germany. Their support of the Boers in the Boer war and their alarming naval build up looked to threaten Britain's control over the world. In 1903, King Edward VII payed a state visit to France in 1903 and the following year signed the treaty to protect themselves against Germany.
1907- The Triple Entente-
In 1907, the Entente Cordiale and the Franco-Russian alliance were merged to form the Triple Entente between France, Britain and Russia.
Europe is now divided into three clear sides: Germany, Austro-Hungary and Italy against Britain, France and Russia. A quarrel between any two countries on opposite sides would quickly draw in the others on their 'team'.
